AGVs Explained

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are mobile robots for use in production, warehousing or any environment that requires the routine movement of products. A typical use for AGVs are as forklift replacements, instead of a forklift and driver an AGV in communication with a control server will pick up a load from one position and unload it in another.

Automated Guided Vehicles go by a variety of names depending on the manufacturer or country of origin, they can also be known as: Laser Guided Vehicles (LGV), Self Guided Vehicles (SGV) and Automated Guided Carts (AGC). Sometimes the naming is based on features of the vehicles (such as Laser Guided Vehicle) and sometimes on the relative size (Automated Guided Carts). At NDC all our vehicles are called AGVs.



Automated Guided Vehicles can be installed into existing facilities with little to no modification of the structure or the storage systems, unlike some automation solution which require costly renovation or purpose built facilities. AGV systems can quickly and easily accommodate changes, both physical changes to the vehicles or operating environment or changes to their order handling logic.
